DURANGO, Colo. — Defending NCAA Division II runnerup Fort Lewis College held Eastern New Mexico University scoreless for more than 11 minutes down the stretch in the first half on Saturday and the Skyhawks rolled to a season-opening 86-56 victory over the Zias.
Junior forward Dana Schreibvogel led a balanced Skyhawks attack with 15 points and also grabbed nine rebounds, while senior guard Abby Jackson added 14 points and five assists.
The Zias, who used 15 players in the contest, were led by 20 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Precious Herrin, who shot 8-of-16 from the floor. Sophomore guard Krista Ford added 10 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting.
Except for a 3-3 tie after a 3-pointer by Herrin with 17:12 to play in the half, the Skyhawks led all the way. ENMU closed to 17-11 on a basket by Herrin at the 12:23 mark, but the Zias went 0-for-6 from the field and committed 14 of their 38 turnovers as the Skyhawks went on a 24-0 run that carried into the final minute of the half.
Ford grabbed a long rebound on a missed 3-pointer by teammate Cat Clay and drained a 3-pointer of her own with 55 seconds left, making it 41-14 at halftime.
Fort Lewis shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and finished at 47 percent on 28-of-59. The Skyhawks also converted 22-of-31 free throws (19-of-26 in the second half) to ENMU’s 12-of-17.
The Zias’ return to action next Saturday in a 7:05 p.m. tipoff at Division I Texas-El Paso.
