Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Dec. 8, 2010, with President Della Kobernick presiding. The Collect was led by Carol Fletcher, the pledges by Linda Leaming, and Sheryl Borden gave the invocation. There were 24 members and 11 guests present.

The minutes from the November meeting were approved, and the treasurer’s report was filed for audit.

Beth Davis won the door prize.

Correspondence was read from the City of Portales. Teresa Howard, civic chair, reported that Meals on Wheels had been successfully completed and thanked everyone for delivering the meals as well as for helping with the mayor’s Blessing Tree. She reminded everyone to bring Valentine’s cards for the three children’s homes in January and February. June Ferguson, membership chair, presented a club flower and welcomed new member, Kaitlyn Maloney. She also read a letter from GFWC encouraging new members.

Gertie Swager, Peanut Festival chair, reported a profit of $896 from the sale of candy and peanuts. Lois Crozier, secretary of South Central Regional Conference, thanked the club for donating the painted ponies for the recent conference in Albuquerque. She then introduced those serving with her on the hostess committee: Beva Spotswood, Kaitlyn Maloney, Mary Mendoza, Iris Johnson and June Ferguson.

Presentations of non-perishable food items were given to the Community Service Center Food Bank, gifts for the Heartland Continuing Care General Store and socks were given to the Hartley House. Representatives from each of these three groups were on hand to receive the donations.

Following the close of the business meeting, Patrice Tompkins, program chair, introduced Dr. William Wood, director of the Handbell Choir at the First United Methodist Church and others who participated, including: Jenifer Baca, Lin Bobo, Jan Smartnick, Ruth Wood and Cindy Brooks. Various musical selections were played.
