Jan. 23 — Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records:

Tuesday

• An officer responded to a report of a fight in progress about 4:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Lime Street.

When he arrived, he found one group of people in an alley and another in the park.

The officer approached the group in the alley, and a 16-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother told him one of the three teenage boys in the park struck her family’s pickup truck with a football.

The officer saw no visible damage to the pickup.

As the siblings were giving their statements, a 14-year-old boy approached from the park, yelling profanities at the other teenagers. The officer ordered the boy back and said he would listen to the boy’s statement in a moment.

The boy continued advancing, and the officer saw the siblings were disturbed by his behavior. The officer approached the 14-year-old and ordered him to stop, but the boy began walking away.

The officer ordered him to stop and get on the ground. Because the officer was outnumbered, he handcuffed the boy.

As he did so, two 15-year-old boys ran toward him from the park, yelling profanities and questioning his authority to detain the 14-year-old. The officer ordered them to lie on the ground until more officers arrived, and he handcuffed one of the 15-year-olds.

Three more officers arrived, and one handcuffed the second 15-year-old who was belligerent toward the first officer.

The girl became verbally hostile toward the three boys as they were being restrained, but complied with an officer’s verbal warning.

The officer arrested the three boys who had behaved belligerently toward him for disorderly conduct. The juvenile probation officer on call authorized him to release the boys to their parents.

The officer also noted his intent to refer the 14-year-old and the brother and sister to the juvenile probation office for public affray.
