San Antonio, Texas — One bad inning cost Eastern New Mexico a shot at salvaging the final game of a three-game Lone Star Conference Series at Incarnate Word.
The conference-leading Cardinals (13-5, 12-3 LSC) scored five runs in the sixth inning with the help of Derrick Walls’ two-run double and an error to take an 8-5 lead, and held on for a 9-7 win Saturday at Sullivan Field.
Junior catcher Joe Huwer went 3-for-4 for ENMU and junior first baseman Mitch Wolfe hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning that staked the Greyhounds to a 5-3 lead.
ENMU (3-14, 1-11) finished with 13 hits.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the eighth on Alex Schultz’’ two-run single to pull within 8-7 Schultz was thrown out at home trying to score from second on Luis Quinones’ single to right to end the inning.
ICW added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on Leroy Urbina’s single.
Matt Roohan had three hits for Incarnate Word and second baseman John Zule added a two-run home run.
Anthony Smith (1-4) started and took the loss.
Keith Vasquez earned the win, allowing three hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings.
