Monday morning briefing: Spring break, farm values and closing The Rock

Good morning and happy spring. It’s the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

Spring break

Sunday marked the first day of spring.

Today marks the start of a week-long spring break for students at Eastern New Mexico University.

Alas, university staff must continue to report to work.

Quirky quote of the day

“How would we measure hail without golf balls?” – Hank Caruso

Cleaning up

There is a Keep Clovis Beautiful Committee meeting at 5:30 p.m., today in the assembly room at City Hall.

It’s open to the public.

Fast fact

In 1925 the farms of Curry County were mortgaged for more than $1 million.

The average indebtedness on a mortgaged farm was $2,830, compared to the farm’s value of $8,630.

Today in history

On this day in 1963, Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closed down.

At it’s peak period of use in 1950s, “The Rock, or “”America’s Devil Island” housed over 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility.
