I recently started looking for a catchy title for my column. I thought maybe it would be similar to the title of the blog that I also write.
When I first started thinking about it, I remembered the words to one of my favorite poems. Poet Dylan Thomas wrote what has no official title but is often called by its first line. “Do not go gently into that good night.”
It was Thomas’ way of telling his father not to give up on life, and to fight against imminent death.
I have changed the wording slightly but the meaning is the same. I title my article “Not Going Peacefully.”
My intention is to not go gently, but to “rage against the dying of the light.” I know this can have several meanings, but to me it means to not give up and to be able to live a full life.
I know I can live life to the fullest if I maintain my health. What was once difficult is now easier; what may have been defeat is now victory.
As I began to be successful in working out and doing things I didn’t think I could, I have a renewed confidence.
I also have a renewed dedication, to not go peacefully, but to leave a definite mark, that I have been here.
