A Portales woman is awaiting a preliminary hearing in Roosevelt County Magistrate Court on charges that she cruelly punished two of her children in February, according to court and police records.
Paula Encinias, 28, also known as Paula Baldivia, is charged with two first offenses of child abuse, a third-degree felony, and has pleaded not guilty, according to www.nmcourts.gov.
According to Portales Police reports:
• Encinias’ two sons, ages 5 and 6, had bruises on their faces and said she hit them for jumping on the bed. The older boy said his mother hit him “everywhere” and he didn’t want to go home with her because she didn’t want him in the house.
• The detective handling the case arranged for the boys and their 1-year-old sister to be taken into Children, Youth and Families Department custody while the case was investigated.
• A warrant was issued for Encinias’ arrest, and she turned herself in Feb. 15, according to reports.
She was released on a $5,000 cash or surety bond, according to www.nmcourts.gov.
Encinias’ attorney, Marna Trammell of Trammell Law Office in Clovis, said she had no comment except that her client maintains her innocence.
