Eastern New Mexico University freshman left-hander Aaron Anderson was able to get out of bases-loaded, no-out jams the first two times he’d been in that situation this season.
The third time, on Friday at Greyhound Field, he wasn’t quite so fortunate.
Catcher Brad Shankle whacked a three-run double, highlighting league-leading Southeastern Oklahoma’s eight-run third and the Savage Storm went on to a 10-1 Lone Star Conference victory.
Southeastern (18-11, 14-5 LSC), among four teams bunched tightly at the top of the conference, opened a 9-0 lead with the outburst and Dan McKinney (4-2) made it stand up with eight strong innings, allowing five hits and one run while throwing 134 pitches.
The Savage Storm broke on top in the second inning on shortstop Kevin Phillips’ sacrifice fly to left off Anderson (2-1), then put together their decisive third inning with six hits.
Southeastern outhit the Greyhounds 13-5, led by third baseman Zach Ragdale with 3-for-4. Four others had two hits for the Savage Storm.
Blake Thompson and Lane Drake combined for six solid innings of relief for the Hounds (7-20, 4-15), allowing five hits and an unearned run — off Drake — in the eighth. Thompson allowed four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over four frames.
ENMU got its lone run in the eighth when first baseman Mitch Wolfe singled to left with two outs and rode home on a double by pinch-hitter Russell Hartshorn. Wolfe finished 2-for-3 with a walk for ENMU.
The teams wrap up their series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader today.
