Two Roosevelt County governing bodies are meeting Tuesday:
• Roosevelt County Commission, 9 a.m., Roosevelt County Courthouse. The agenda includes the issue of whether to close a 1-mile section of South Roosevelt Road U.
• Portales City Council, 7 p.m., City Hall. The agenda includes notice of intent to adopt an ordinance banning certain synthetic drugs.
Curry County’s citizen committee on security issues at the courthouse and jail meets 1:30 p.m. at the north annex of the Clovis-Carver library.

Today in history
On this day in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. is fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers’ strike and was on his way to dinner when a bullet struck him in the jaw and severed his spinal cord.
