My turn: Plenty of events set for weekend

Local residents with children told me the Portales and Clovis community egg hunts were a great source of family fun last weekend.

I enjoyed spending Easter in Texas, getting quality egg-hunting time with my niece and nephew. While on this trip, I acquired a green plastic egg, which lights up and spins and has been a constant source of entertainment for me and my cat.

Saturday marks the sidewalk chalk art competition at the Roosevelt County Courthouse for students in kindergarten through Eastern New Mexico University students. I’ve seen pictures of excellent pieces from last year, so I anticipate it will be fun to see the creative sidewalk art the students come up with.

Also on Saturday is the 5K run at the Greyhound Arena, which highlights Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Sunday marks “An Evening with Sam Shepherd,” a theater event which performs excerpts of Shepherd’s works and will be 2 p.m. at the University Theatre Center.

Also on Sunday, check out the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at 3 p.m. at Buchanan Hall.

All of these events are free, so be sure to go check them out and show support for your local artists and runners.
