Monday morning briefing: Meetings, a graduation and Buddy Holly hits in Clovis

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

Meetings watch

The following Roosevelt County governing bodies are scheduled to meet this week:

• Roosevelt County Commission, 9 a.m. Tuesday, Roosevelt County Courthouse. The agenda includes the budget for the next fiscal year and discussion about Dalley windmill collection relocation expenses.

• Roosevelt General Hospital board, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, hospital conference room.

• Portales City Council, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Portales City Hall. The agenda includes the interim budget for next fiscal year and a contract for banking services with First Community Bank.


Clovis High School graduation ceremonies are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Curry County Events Center.

On Feb. 25, 1957, Buddy Holly and The Crickets recorded “That’ll be the Day” at Norman Petty’s Recording Studios in Clovis. The song climbed the hit charts to No. 1 in the country some seven months later.

Today in history

On this day in 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out its first awards, at a dinner party for around 250 people held in the Blossom Room of the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.
