Buddy Holly, who recorded most of his hit records in Clovis, was born Charles Hardin Holley on Sept. 7, 1936, in Lubbock.
His last name was misspelled on a record contract and Holly kept the spelling until his death.
But his Lubbock tombstone reads, “Buddy Holley.”

Today in history
On this day in 1943, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt set a date for the cross-Channel landing that would become D-Day—May 1, 1944.
That date would prove a bit premature, as bad weather became a factor.
Here’s the rest of the story:
Today — Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to between 25 and 30 mph. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.
Tonight — Partly cloudy, with a low around 44. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to between 10 and 15 mph. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
