Reader submitted content: Community invited to celebrate Heritage Days

The Heritage Days parade on Saturday will be taking parade registration up until 9:15 a.m. the day of the parade at the corner of South Avenue O and West Second Street on the Eastern New Mexico University campus.

Anyone or group that has not pre-registered is invited to show up the morning of the parade to participate.

The parade begins 10 a.m. Saturday and kicks off the 27th annual Heritage Days celebration. The route will be north on Second Street then right on Abilene to City Park where activities, including live music, food booths, vendors and games will be held.

This year, Heritage Days will hold children’s games in various age categories beginning at 2 p.m. on the baseball field at City Park.

The games, sponsored by Sunland, Inc., will include stick horse races, peanut toss, peanut sack races, red light, green light, family relay and a special heat featuring community leaders. There will be lots of prizes, from restaurant gift certificates to pool passes and toys.

Children are welcome to bring their own stick horses or borrow one from the Chamber’s remuda.

Sign up on the ball field will begin at 1:45 p.m.
