Altrusa Club of Portales

The Altrusa International, Inc. Club of Portales met July 11 at noon in the Central Annex. President, Gaynelle Thomas, called the meeting to order. There were 24 members and three guests present. JoAnna Baker led the opening ceremonies. The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved.

Dannah Brown gave the Altrusa Accent of the Reading is Fundamental program. Secret pals were thanked, and Judy White drew for the Queen of Hearts.

The president reminded members to turn in their service hours for July at the next meeting. Elly Helton reported on the Home Tour, scheduled for Sept. 18, and announced a planning meeting to be held. The president asked members to bring aluminum cans and pull tabs to the next meeting and to remember to wear their Altrusa pin.

A thank you note was read from Jodi Kibbe and the Portales Recreation Center. The Social Committee and Fifth Monday Committee met after the meeting adjourned.

After the close of the business meeting, Nancy Taylor, director of the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico, reported on the non-profit agency that serves five counties in the area. Members filled bags for the backpack program, one of eight programs conducted by the food bank.

Nellie Dyer, vice president, announced that Sara Ortega, Make-a-Wish recipient, would give the program at the July 25 meeting.
