Roosevelt County wins state opener

ALBUQUERQUE — The Roosevelt County All-Stars roughed up Espanola Valley, winning 10-2 on Saturday in the opening round of the state 10-11 Little League tournament.

No particulars were available on the game at press time. Roosevelt County returns to action at 10 a.m. today against Los Lunas in winners bracket play.

Two of the other three District 3 state representatives were in action in first-round play on Saturday. The Curry County All-Stars — made up of players from Clovis’ Zia and American Leagues — dropped a 9-2 decision to Carlsbad in the state Juniors (13-14) tournament at Albuquerque, while Clovis American absorbed an 11-6 loss to Silver City in the 9-10 tourney at Roswell.

Curry County played a losers bracket game on Saturday night against Gallup, while American was set to return to action at 3 p.m. today against Albuquerque South Valley.

The fourth team, Clovis Zia, sat out on Saturday as the host of the state Majors (11-12) tournament. Two of the day’s first three games went extra innings, with Albuquerque Altamont beating Carlsbad Shorthorn 7-6 in nine innings and Roswell Noon Optimist winning a 15-14, seven-inning slugfest from Los Lunas Enchantment in a game which featured six home runs.

In the late game, Taos defeated Bayard Copper 3-1.

Zia’s first game will be at 7 p.m. today against Noon Optimist at Dickenson Field.
