Portales man charged in 2009 slaying tested for trial competency

Portales resident Leroy Salaz, charged with voluntary manslaughter in the 2009 stabbing death of Marco Bonilla, is being treated to see if he’s competent to stand trial, the prosecutor on the case said Wednesday.

Deputy District Attorney Brian Stover said Salaz was sent to the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute at Las Vegas after a local evaluation indicated he wasn’t competent. Stover said expects a report in about two months, 90 days from Salaz’s arrival at the institute.
