Letters to the editor: Drivers should take extra precautions

Drivers should take extra precautions

School began for most Portales students last week. I was surprised that I didn’t see any patrol officers around to serve as a reminder of the school zone speed limit.

As I was waiting for my children after school at Valencia Elementary last week, I noticed two vehicles pass through the school zone at a high speed. The driver never slowed as he passed through. I have also seen this in the morning when parents are rushing to get their children to school.

Having patrol officers the first week of school patrolling schools in my opinion warns school zone speeders that they need to slow down or they will be ticketed. Student safety should be a high priority for Portales.

Let’s not wait until a tragedy occurs before school zones are enforced and/or obeyed.
