Freshman forward Alysia Carrasco scored shortly before halftime and Eastern New Mexico University hung on for a 2-1 win over rival West Texas A&M on Tuesday in the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer opener for both teams at the ENMU pitch.
Carrasco converted a cross pass from freshman Victoria Perez in the final minute of the half for her second goal of the season, giving the Zias (2-2) a 2-0 halftime lead. ENMU finished the match with only the two shots on goal it converted.
The Lady Buffs (3-2) cut the margin in half midway through the second period when Becky McMullen scored unassisted. ENMU senior goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas, who did not face a shot in the first half, stopped the Lady Buffs’ only other two shots in the second stanza.
The Zias struck with less than 14 minutes gone when junior defender Emily Simon scored her first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick by junior Kimberly Luna.
The win was the third all-time for ENMU against WT, all by a single goal. The Zias beat WT 1-0 in 2009 and 2-1 in 2007, both at home.
