West Texas A&M, ranked 14th in NCAA Division II, dominated the first two sets and cruised to a 25-10, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday night at Greyhound Arena.
Junior outside hitter Stormi Lancaster recorded 10 kills, 10 digs and six block assists for the Lady Buffs (17-2, 8-1 LSC), who moved one-half game ahead of idle Angelo State for first place in the league. Junior middle blocker Erin Doherty had nine kills, while senior outside hitter Erika Dupree added six kills and eight total blocks (two solos).
The Zias (4-13,1-8) were led by eight kills by junior outside hitter Evelyn Escobar. Junior outside hitter Amber Durand added seven kills and 13 digs.
ENMU led 1-0 in the first set, but WT went on a 13-4 run and never looked back. The Lady Buffs led all the way after a 1-1 tie in the second set, although the Zias managed to stay within a few points most of the way before WT scored the final four points — the last three on kills by Dougherty.
The Zias scored the first two points and led much of the third set. They were up three times by three points, the last at 17-14 on a kill by Durand, but WT went on an 8-0 run featuring two kills each from Dupree and junior outside hitter Sarah Martin to gain control.
The Zias will be home again on Thursday for a 7 p.m. LSC matchup against Texas Woman’s.
