Neely Borger collected 12 kills and eight block assists Saturday night as Abilene Christian cruised to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Arena.
ACU (17-12, 11-6 LSC) led most of the way, although the Zias (5-22, 1-17) made the first set interesting until late.
Sara Oxford, who finished with 10 kills, opened the match with three of them to stake Abilene Christian to a quick 3-0 lead. The Zias went on a 7-1 run to close to 11-10 and still trailed just 18-17 before committing three consecutive attack errors.
ENMU scored the first three points of the second set and led 11-8 after a kill from junior outside hitter Amber Durand. With the Zias in front 13-11, ACU took the lead for good with a 10-0 run featuring three kills from Borger.
The Zias led 7-4 early in Game 3, but two aces by Madelyn Robinett keyed a 5-0 run which broke a 13-13 tie and the Wildcats finished it out on a 12-3 run.
Hutt also had 10 kills for ACU. The Zias got eight kills and five total blocks from senior middle hitter Jessica King, while junior middle blocker Bree Lucero added six kills and five block assists and junior defensive specialist Dallas Russell had 16 digs and two aces.
The Zias play their home finale at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against New Mexico Highlands, then wrap up their season on the road next week with LSC matches at Texas Woman’s on Thursday and at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.
