GOODWELL, Okla. — Senior forward Curtis Wilkinson shot 10-of-11 from the floor en route to a season-best 20 points off the bench and Eastern New Mexico University’s men extended their winning streak to six games Saturday night with a 98-84 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Wilkinson led five players in double figures for ENMU (6-1), which shot 59 percent from the floor and led by double figures for good after the first five minutes.
Senior forward Max Carrier added a season-best 19 points for the Greyhounds, while senior guard Stefan Mirabel had four of the team’s 10 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Senior forward Aaron Edwards and senior guard Tralyn Harden chipped in 14 and 11 tallies, respectively.
The Aggies (1-5) also had five players in double figures, led by senior guard D’ron Walker with 23 points. Freshman guard Michael Patterson had a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Jared Messed pulled the Aggies into a 2-2 tie after the first minute, but Edward’s 3-pointer kicked off a 9-0 ENMU run. Another basket by Edwards made it 17-6 with 15:28 left in the half and the Aggies managed to get the lead to 10 a couple of times before the Hounds pulled away.
Two free throws by junior center Greg McFarland pushed the margin to 48-30 with four minutes left, and the Hounds carried a 56-40 lead into halftime, buoyed by a 7-for-16 showing from 3-point range.
A basket and two free throws by Carrier extended the margin to 20 points for the first time early in the second half. The biggest lead of the game was 82-58 with just under 10 minutes left after a basket by Mirabal.
The Hounds compiled 21 assists on their 40 baskets, with senior point guard Reggie Nelson collecting eight.
ENMU returns home for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Monday against University of the Southwest at Greyhound Arena.
