My turn: English professor had good advice

I’m no stranger to Eastern New Mexico University graduations and I always enjoy seeing the excitement. But Saturday’s commencement was even more special because one of my ENMU heroes was the commencement speaker.

ENMU English professor Carol Erwin is respected and adored by her students and it is well earned.

Being an English major, I had many classes with her while at ENMU and while loving her ability to be patient and joke with her students, the thing I admired most was her ability to be completely straight forward, no matter the cost.

Anytime I felt discouraged while in school, all it took to feel encouraged again was a 20-minute visit to Erwin’s office. She would tell me in her honest manner that things were just going to get tougher in my college career. But then she would tell me she knew I had what it took to get through it and that I was doing exactly what I needed to be doing: My best.

I am happy I’m not alone in my admiration of this wonderful lady and I can honestly say, wherever I find myself attending graduate school, I’ll be buying Carol Erwin a plane ticket, because I can’t imagine being hooded by anyone else.
