HOBBS — Junior right fielder Sam Hedrick went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and junior left-hander Daniel Sterling pitched five effective innings Sunday to give Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team a 12-4 victory over host University of the Southwest to complete play in the Mustangs’ three-team, double-round-robin weekend affair.
The Greyhounds (5-2), who went 3-1 in the event, lost 10-7 earlier Sunday to New Mexico Highlands.
ENMU jumped all over Mustangs pitching early, bolting to a 9-1 lead in the first three innings. Sterling (1-1) worked five innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while sophomore Aaron Anderson earned a four-inning save, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned).
Hedrick, who also scored twice and stole a base, doubled home two runs in ENMU’s four-run second and added an RBI single in the third. Senior first baseman Joe Huwer went 4-for-5 in a 17-hit attack, while Daniel Binz and Matt Nilo each drove in a pair of runs.
Third baseman Ysidro Reyna drove in three runs for the Mustangs (0-4).
Against Highlands, Huwer went 2-for-5 and gave ENMU a 5-3 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth, but the Cowboys regained the lead with a five-run seventh highlighted by catcher Robbie Ingram’s go-ahead, two-run single.
ENMU starter Ryan Boydstun pitched five innings, while reliever Chris Batazska (0-1) took the loss. Gavin Hite (1-0) earned the win for Highlands with a scoreless sixth, and Oscar Almelda notched a save by pitching the final three innings.
Blake Thomsen went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly for the Hounds, who were outhit 10-8.
The Hounds travel to Durant, Okla., for a three-game series against Southeastern Oklahoma, beginning with an 11 a.m. (MST) doubleheader on Friday.
ENMU softball — In West Texas A&M’s Lady Buff Classic at Canyon, Texas, the Zias finished the three-day event at 1-4 when they lost on Sunday to Regis University 9-6.
The win was the first of the season for the Rangers (1-9). Second baseman Breanna Backlund and catcher Taylor Wilcox went deep back-to-back in the first to give Regis a quick 3-0 lead — Backlund’s was a two-run shot — and the Rangers never looked back.
Trailing 6-0, the Zias (4-8) mounted a comeback with two in the fifth and two in the sixth, but they left the bases loaded in the latter frame. Regis added three in the seventh, including a two-run single by Wilcox, before freshman Katie Ramsay belted a two-run homer for ENMU in the bottom of the inning.
Wilcox went 3-for-4 for the Rangers, who outhit ENMU 11-8. Freshman Amy Smith (2-3) was chased in the third inning and took the loss in the circle.
The Zias’ next outing is on Feb. 29 when they open their home slate with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Texas-Permian Basin.
