Portales squads finish fifth at Hobbs meet

HOBBS — Senior Collin McAfee won both hurdles races and Portales High's boys finished fifth with 38 points in its season-opening track meet on Friday, the seven-team Gene Wells Relays.

The PHS girls also came in fifth with 42 points. Hobbs ran away with both division, scoring 155 1/2 points in the boys meet and 160 in girls competition.

McAfee ran times of 16.59 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 43.50 in the 300 hurdles. Senior Ben Blue added a second-place finish for the Rams in high jump (5-8), while junior Brandon Jaynes in triple jump (38-0 1/2) and senior Wyatt Legler in the 200 (23.72) finished third.

The Lady Rams best finishes were seconds by junior Kristen Wagner in triple jump at 33 feet, 5 inches, and junior Heather Bonifant in javelin at 93-11. PHS added four third-place finishes — Veronica Ayala in high jump (4-6 1/4), Alex Ledbetter in pole vault (7-6), Magdalina Gaeta in the 100 hurdles (17.66) and the 1,600 relay (4:18.40).

PHS squads will host the Jim Love Invite on Saturday.
