Rams sweep District 4-3A triangular

LOVINGTON — David Rodriguez struck out nine batters and homered and Mikey Lovato hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth Saturday to lift the Portales Rams past Lovington 5-4 in a District 4-3 baseball triangular.

The Rams (9-2) completed a sweep with a 14-4 rout of Ruidoso in the second game. Lovington (7-8) posted a 11-7 win over the Warriors (2-7) in the finale.

The homer by Rodriguez, who went 3-for-5, put the Rams in front of Lovington 4-2 in the sixth, but the Wildcats forced extra innings with a two-run seventh.

Rodriguez returned in the eighth to relieve Daniel Zapata and finished it for the win.

"David wasn't on his "A' game, but he gives us a chance every time," Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said. "It was a battle for nine innings."

Lovato also had a two-run single in the fourth to erase a 1-0 Wildcats lead.

The Rams scored in every inning against Ruidoso, ending it on the 10-run rule with five in the bottom of the sixth.

Jesus Acosta went the distance for Portales, striking out eight and allowing seven hits.

"It was close for two or three innings, but they (Warriors) made some errors and we capitalized on it," Ontiveros said. "We got into their bullpen a little bit."

Freshman catcher Matthew Martinez went 2-for-3 two RBIs, while senior Brandon Lovato doubled, homered, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in three.
