A Portales police officer resigned from the department Wednesday, less than one week after a New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy board member announced his officer certification had been suspended.
Mikel Aguilar resigned to "pursue other endeavors," according to Lt. Mark Cage, who said Thursday the department had still not received any formal notification from the NMLEA concerning the officer's certification status.
Cage said his department was told by NMLEA officials the officer's certification had not been suspended.
According to Chaves County Sheriff James Coon, who is vice chair of the NMLEA board, Aguilar's certification was suspended for having sexual relations in a police vehicle while on duty with the Roswell Police Department.
His employment with the Roswell department ended Jan. 3, 2011.
Other NMLEA officials have been unavailable for comment.
Efforts to contact Aguilar for comment were not successful.
