LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Dominic Lucero scored on a 3-yard run in overtime Friday night, giving Las Vegas Robertson a 13-7 win over the Portales Rams in the season opener for both teams.
PHS got the ball first in the extra period, but the possession ended with a lost fumble — the Rams' third lost fumble and fifth turnover overall in the game.
"If we could've eliminated the turnovers, we would've been victorious," first-year Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. "It's a game of execution, and we didn't execute as well as we needed to."
Portales broke on top late in the first half when sophomore quarterback Paul Conrow threw a 30-yard TD pass to senior receiver Daniel Hernandez. Zach Blaeser's PAT kick made it 7-0 at halftime.
The Rams then turned the ball over on their first three possessions of the second half, and Robertson finally pulled even midway through the third quarter on a 3-yard TD run by Jimmy Gonzales.
Conrow finished with 115 yards rushing on 18 carries and also threw for 87 yards. Senior Ozzie Navarrete added 44 yards rushing for Portales.
The Rams are on the road again next Friday, taking on Muleshoe.
