Zias split in first day of WT tourney

CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University's volleyball team opened its season on Friday with a split in the Lady Buff Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M at The Box.

The Zias posted a 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory over Texas-Permian Basin, then lost to Adams State 25-18, 25-19, 25-13.

ENMU finishes play in the event today with matches against Western State (Colo.) at 8 a.m. and North Alabama at 2:30 p.m. (MDT).

Senior outside hitter Amber Durand compiled 31 kills in the two matches, including 20 against UTPB. Fort Sumner senior Bree Lucero added 14 kills in the win over the Falcons.

Durand posted a double-double against UTPB with 17 digs, while junior Hayley Couch had 38 digs for the day. She notched 31 of them against Permian Basin, becoming the first Zia to record more than 30 digs in a match since Caitlin Murphy did it in 2008.
