Freshman forward Sierra Anderson scored off a rare assist by the goalkeeper early in the first half, and the Angelo State Rambelles made it stand up for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference women's soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Sunday at the ENMU pitch.
ASU (5-4-1, 3-2-1 LSC), coached by former ENMU coach Travis McCorkle, got on the board with less than 6 1/2 minutes gone after senior goalkeeper Danielle Edwards corraled a shot by ENMU sophomore forward Alysia Carrasco. She drop-kicked the ball out to near midfield where Sierra won a battle for possession and beat ENMU freshman goalkeeper Xan Ortiz one-on-one for what turned out to be the only score of the day.
The Zias (4-7-0, 3-4-0) had their best scoring opportunity late in the half when senior midfielder Danielle Thurman slipped past the defense and fired a shot that bounced off the goal post.
The Zias, outshot 11-5 overall in the first half, put more pressure on the Rambelles the rest of the way. Thurman had three of her four shots on goal in the second session.
ENMU will be at home for a pair of LSC matches this weekend, facing Midwestern State at 4 p.m. on Friday and Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
