ABILENE, Texas — Senior left fielder Kyle Conwell, who hadn't homered in more than 100 at-bats this season, led off the bottom of the seventh with his third of the game and Abilene Christian rallied for a 5-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday, completeing a sweep of their a Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader.
It was the third one-run game of the series, with ENMU winning 11-10 in 11 innings on Thursday and ACU taking Friday's opener 2-1. The teams finish the series with a noon (MDT) nine-inning contest today.
The Hounds (17-12, 5-6 LSC), who saw a six-game winning streak end in Friday's first game, opened a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth on four hits and two ACU errors, but starter Aaron Lambrix and reliever Brady Rodriguez (2-1) combined to retire the final 11 ENMU hitters.
Conwell led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run off ENMU's Brian Kennedy, and he hit a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth. The Wildcats (19-12, 8-3) tied it in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Tyler Edgar .
Montano, the fourth ENMU pitcher, took over with runners at the corners and got Travis Schuetze on a pop-up, then got Kyle Guisti on a fly ball to keep the game tied after the teams sat out about a hour delay for lightning. In the seventh, Conwell hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall to end it.
In Friday's first game, Chuck Duarte's run-scoring single in the fourth gave ACU a 1-0 lead. The Wldcats' Carter Hahn carried that into the sixth, but ENMU catcher Jacob Rogers hit his third homer of the season with two out.
In the bottom half, two walks by starter Jas Shergill (2-3), a wild pitch by Montano and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, and ACU's Ty Taylor delivered a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
