AMARILLO — If someone asked Portales High softball coach Robbie Crowley about the desginated player rule after Saturday's game at Amarillo High, she'd have probably voted against it.
The Lady Sandies' DP, Ashby Williams, simply had a monster game — five hits with three home runs, including two in a nine-run sixth that lifted the home team to a 16-10 victory.
Williams deliverd a single in the first, an RBI single in the third, a two-run homer in the fourth and a two-run shot and a grand slam in the Lady Sandies' game-winning rally.
Until then, Portales (3-3) had led the entire way since getting a two-run triple from Mariah Lovato in the first inning.
"We played OK," Crowley said. "When you put 10 runs on the board you should win, but they hit the ball really well."
The Lady Rams led 6-0 after a four-run second, then got a three-run triple from sophomore Kailee Ramirez in a four-run fifth after the Lady Sandies had gone in front 7-6 in the fourth.
PHS returns to action on Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. clash against Clovis at Wheeler Park.
