Portales robbery suspect released on bond

A Portales man police say robbed a local Allsup's and used a bomb threat ruse was released from the Roosevelt County Detention Center Thursday morning on a $5,000 bond.

Nathan Nixon, 28, was charged with robbery, according to detention center staff. He was arrested early Wednesday morning after claiming a bomb was in the bathroom of an Allsup's on North Chicago Avenue, according to Portales police.

Police said the bomb claim was used as a distraction to help facilitate the robbery.

Nixon was arrested in Portales shortly after an officer spotted him from a description the store clerk had provided.

Nixon could not be reached for comment Thursday night. Denise Nixon said her son returned the money he took from the store.

Portales Police Chief Doug Jones declined to give any more details about Nixon's arrest.
