A 43-year-old Portales man accidentally shot himself in the leg Monday, according to Portales police.
He is being treated at a Lubbock hospital. He told police he dropped his .45 caliber firearm, causing it to fire, according to police. The incident took place in a small shed on the 100 block of South Houston, police said.
Officials declined to release the injured man’s name.
“We got a 911 call (Monday) afternoon and the call lasted 15 seconds. He stated that he thought his leg had been shot and hung up,” said Portales Chief of Police Doug Jones. “He called back 45 seconds later and he requested assistance.”
Jones said three other men were found in the residence when police responded.
Jones said no charges have been filed related to the incident.
