Local Brief: Wanted Clovis man arrested

A 54-year-old Clovis certified public accountant wanted for failure to appear in court to face charges he embezzled nearly $300,000 from the New Mexico Cattle Growers Foundation was arrested Monday in Lubbock, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office.

Police say in 2010 and 2011, Charles W. Fleming deposited 20 checks totaling approximately $296,000 from the foundation into his personal bank account. He was the foundation’s treasurer at the time.

According to the release:

  • Acting on a tip, Texas Rangers took Fleming into custody without incident about 2 p.m. Monday at a residence in Lubbock.
  • Fleming’s bond is being held on a $250,000 bond and he will have an extradition hearing will be set within the week.
  • Fleming was arrested for embezzlement July 2 following an investigation by the New Mexico State Police.

Curry County Magistrate Court issued an arrest warrant based upon his failure to appear recently for his first hearing.
