Local Brief — Man hit by van in stable condition

A 24-year-old Portales man, hit by a van early Sunday morning, was in stable condition Tuesday at a Lubbock hospital, according to his mother.

Debra Russell declined additional comment, but Police Chief Doug Jones said Cory Russell suffered broken bones and an injured spleen.

Police at 2:21 a.m. Sunday received a call about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of University Avenue and Avenue K on the Eastern New Mexico University campus.

Jones said Tuesday the accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed against the driver of the van, who was not injured.
