Pigskin preview: Broncos forced to drop to six-man

6-man Independent

• 2012 record: 2-7

• Coach: Steve Foust (2nd year, 2-7)

• Returning starters (offense): 3

• Returning starters (defense): 3

• Things 2 look 4: The Broncos played 8-man football last year and struggled with numbers despite co-opting with Elida. This year, there are seven players for a scrambled-together six-game schedule, and all the players are from Floyd. … Foust has previously coached in 6-man at House and San Jon. “It’s a different game (from 8-man),” he said. “Six-man is the most unique level (in football) of all of them. It’s a lot faster game (than 8-man), and you’ve got to be in a lot better shape.” … The roster includes a girl, junior Tanesa Watson, who actually played football two years ago. Foust said another boy could decide to come out. “She’s a hard worker with a great attitude,” Foust said. “She’s not shy; she gets in there and hits people.” … Floyd will ride its three returning regulars — seniors W.T. Whitecotton, Terral Watson (Tanesa’s brother) and Colby Rogers. “We’ve got three really good leaders,” Foust said.

• Biggest area of concern: Health. If ever a team needed to get through a season injury-free, this is it.

• Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost to Melrose in the state 8-man semifinals.

• Coach’s take: “Six-man is definitely better-suited for our kids; it’s really where we belong.”
