Lady Rams fall in soccer, volleyball

The Portales High girls soccer team came out with a bang on Tuesday.

Junior Alejandra Gonzalez fired in a shot from outside the 18-yard box just 37 seconds into the contest, but Roswell Goddard scored in the second minute of play and went on to a 4-1 victory at PHS in the Lady Rams’ home opener.

“They’re a very physical team and they have good forwards,” first-year PHS coach Sara Vasquez said. “They came at us hard out of the midfield.”

Freshman midfielder Bianca Morones scored twice for the Lady Rockets (5-1), including the go-ahead goal about eight minutes before halftime. Freshman forward Desarae Flores had two goals, including t he tying goal from about 25 yards out on the right side in the second minute.

Marones’ second goal was a header midway through the second half for the final goal of the day, on an assist from Flores.

Junior Jasmin Vega had two saves in goal for the Lady Rams (2-3).

Portales returns to action on Saturday with a home district match at noon against East Mountain. Boys teams will play in the second half of the doubleheader.

PHS volleyball team edged — The Roswell Lady Coyotes stormed from behind Tuesday to edge Portales 23-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-10 at Roswell.

Senior outside hitter Kristen Wagner paced the Lady Rams (2-1) with 22 kills and three aces. Roswell High improved to 2-0 for the season.

Portales returns to action on FridaY and Saturday in an invitational tournament at Moriarty.
