Portales City Manager Doug Redmond named Lt. Pat Gallegos interim police chief Friday, according to a press release.
The announcement follows the resignation of Chief Doug Jones.
Gallegos said he was “honored to have been selected for the position,” according to the press release. He has been with the department since 2008.
Jones, who started as chief in November, announced his intention to resign during a meeting with Redmond on Wednesday. Redmond said they discussed issues within the department and issues with Jones but he was not asked to resign.
Jones submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday.
The search for Jones’ replacement will not begin for another two to three months, according to Redmond.
Redmond said he wants to give the department time to regroup from its past issues.
According to the press release, Gallegos said he understands the turmoil that has been present for the past few years and hopes the department can move forward.
