Hounds score late to edge Air Force JV

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Junior running back Cameron Mikell capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:07 left on Friday, giving Eastern New Mexico University a 42-35 victory over the Air Force junior varsity.

The game was played as an exhibition by ENMU (1-1). Records from the game are not recognized by the NCAA because it came against a JV opponent.

The touchdown, Mikell’s second of the contest, came after the Falcons (2-1) scored touchdowns on three consecutive drives to earase the Greyhounds’ 35-14 lead.

AFA opened a 14-6 lead n the opening quarter with touchdowns on its first two possessions. ENMU got on the board midway through the period on a 5-yard run by junior Vaughn Johnson, but a missed PAT kick kept the Falcons in front 7-6.

The Hounds took advantage of two muffed punts by the Air Force JV to put up 22 second-quarter points for a 28-14 halftime lead.

The first resulted in a 3-yard TD run by Mikell and a 2PAT run by Jordan Wells early in the second period. After the Falcons missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, the Hounds drove the field for a 2-yard TD run by senior Christian Long with 8:22 left in the period.

ENMU then recovered another muffed punt near midfield and junior quarterback Jeremy Buurma capped the drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Aaron Johnson with 1:10 to go in the half. Mitchell Cox kicked the point-after for a 28-14 lead.

ENMU then drove 4 1/2 minutes following the second-half kickoff and went up 35-14 when Buurma went over from a yard out on fourth down.

ENMU returns to regular-season action next Saturday with a 5 p.m. (MDT) kickoff at former Lone Star Conference member Incarnate Word.
