Texas A&M-Kingsville erased a four-point deficit late in the first game and went on to beat Eastern New Mexico University 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 in a Lone Star Conference volleyball match on Friday night at Greyhound Arena.
Kelsey Washington notched eight kills and 10 digs for the Javelinas (5-5, 1-0 LSC), while Stephanie Johns added seven kills and five block assists.
Meantime, the Zias (3-7, 1-1) got a double-double from freshman outside hitter Courtney Lawson (a match-high 14 kills, 11 digs), her sixth double-double of the season.
The Zias opened leads of 10-7 and 18-14 in the first set, but the Javelinas roared back with an 11-3 run to take the set.
Kingsville won a sluggish second set for both teams offensively, helped by a 3-0 advantage in blocks, then opened a 10-point lead in Game 3. The Zias stormed back to close to 21-19, but couldn’t maintain the rally.
Senior Bree Lucero of Fort Sumner had a team-high three blocks for the Zias, including their only block solo, while senior libero Hayley Couch had a match-high 16 digs.
The Zias return to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. (MDT) conference matchup against Midwestern State at Wichita Falls, Texas.
