A Portales man was indicted by a Roosevelt County grand jury Friday on one charge of inflicting great bodily harm by motor vehicle.

Jimmy Carley was the driver of a white 2007 Ford van that, according to several witnesses, struck 24-year-old pedestrian Cory Russell at the intersection of University and South Avenue K in the early-morning hours of Aug. 11 in Portales.

Debra Russell said Friday her son has since been released from the hospital and is getting stronger every day. Carley did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

According to the incident report:

l Carley was delivering newspapers for the Portales News-Tribune at the time of the accident.

l Russell suffered two broken vertebra in his back, multiple broken ribs, fractures to his pelvis and a bruise to his kidney and spleen as a result of the accident. Carley was not injured.

l Items consistent with the consumption of synthetic marijuana were found near and inside the van.
