One team, Roswell High, has kept the Portales High volleyball squad from being unbeaten to this point in the season.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Rams made amends for that setback with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-13 thrashing of the Lady Coyotes at the Ram Athletic Center.

Senior Kristen Wagner pounded out 12 kills and the Lady Rams (8-1) kept Roswell High at bay most of the night.

Portales was also reasonably solid behind the service line and put together 11 aces — from a total of of six players — to none for Roswell High (5-6).

“Serves are a big part of our game,” said senior defensive specialist Francis Armijo, who had two of the aces to go with eight digs. “That just frustrates the other team. Once we get ahead, we usually stay ahead.”

Earlier, PHS lost in five games at Roswell.

“When it goes to a fifth game, just about anything can happen,” Lady Rams coach Ruth Chavez said. “We knew their tendencies and we just played real solid tonight.”

The Lady Rams (8-1) wasted little time taking control of the first game, running off six consecutive points to pull away from a 2-2 tie — the last five coming on Lady Coyotes errors.

“We’ve got some injured players and we’re trying to work through some things right now,” Roswell High coach Heather Baca said. “Our serve-receive wasn’t very good tonight.”

The Lady Coyotes led much of the second set before a 4-0 PHS run — including a kill by Wagner and an ace by senior Pari Cox — put Portales in control. At 23-22, the Lady Coyotes made back-to-back attack errors to give PHS a commanding two-set lead.

The third set was close until a Roswell High service error started a 9-0 run that put the Lady Rams up 19-9.

“We did better tonight on serve-receive than we did in Roswell,” Armijo said.

Sanchez had 10 kills and the only block for the Lady Coyotes.

“We couldn’t run any offense,” Baca said.

The Lady Rams are back in action at home on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. matchup with Roswell Goddard.
