CMI Staff Report
One man accused of a violent crime remained at large and two others were captured early this morning in the second escape from the Roosevelt County jail in three months.
All three men escaped from the Roosevelt County jail late Friday, according to Sheriff Darren Hooker said.
Robert Claudio, 31, of Portales, jailed on charges that include aggravated battery, is the man authorities are still searching for, Hooker said.
Two other escapees, Abran Baeza, 22, of Portales, and Noel Webb, 32, of Tucumcari, were captured early this morning at 1315 N. Ave. M Place, Hooker said.
Officials said they are still investigating how the three escaped.
A sheriff’s news release said the three were discovered missing about 11 p.m. Friday.
It appears that the escapees were able to gain access to the roof from within the cell area and from there make it to the ground and fled on foot, Hooker said.
The sheriff said officers found three discarded orange inmate uniforms in a search of the area immediately outside the jail. He said investigation into how the inmates were able to access the roof is a priority.
On June 22, two inmates escaped from the Roosevelt County jail using a metal bunk bed leg to pound their way through the ceiling and roof. As the latest trio to escape, Stephen Phillips and Ruben Lozano leaped to the ground once on the roof.
Lozano, who injured himself in the leap, was captured about a week later in Midland, Texas.
Phillips showed up minutes after the escape at the home of Jeannie Ornealas of Portales and asked for help. Ornealas convinced Phillips to turn himself in and made him a bologna sandwich while they waited for police to arrive.
In the latest escape on Friday, Hooker said arrest warrants were issued for all three escapees that included escape from jail, conspiracy to escape, and possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner. The warrants were signed by District Judge Donna Mowrer and each carries a bond of $100,000.00 cash only.
Prior to the escape, Baeza was being held on charges of battery upon a household member, two counts of trafficking controlled substances, resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer, larceny, interference with communications, failure to appear, and probation and parole violations.
Webb was being held on charges of criminal damage to property and a hold, for unknown charges, out of Quay County.
Claudio was being held on charges of aggravated battery and probation violation.
