Apparently, New Mexico Military had the Portales Rams right where it wanted them when the Colts showed up at PHS on Thursday.
NMMI (6-7-1) is winless in five home matches this season, but improved to 5-0-1 on the road (the Colts went 1-2 in a neutral-field tournament) when it posted a 3-2 victory over the Rams in double overtime.
Junior Juan Larrieu scored the winner for NMMI with about three minutes left in the second OT. Sophomore Everardo Ahumado notched the first two goals for the Colts, one in each half.
“It was a pretty even match,” said Rams coach Nathan Dodge, whose team opened the season with a 1-0 win over NMMI at Roswell. “Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.
“But the kids are playing hard and leaving it all on the field.”
Sophomore Saul Fernandez gave the Rams the lead in the sixth minute, and freshman Freddy Exiga got the tying goal midway through the second half.
Junior Lane Nichols made 11 saves in goal for Portales, which was outshot for the match 14-11 on goal.
The Rams have four regular-season matches remaining. Three of them are in District 2/1A-3A, beginning with Saturday’s noon start against St. Michael’s at PHS.
