CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University and West Texas A&M women’s soccer team played to a scoreless double-overtime Lone Star Conference draw on Friday night, and it was no surprise for either squad.
The Zias (4-5-4, 1-2-3 LSC) have now seen nine of their 13 matches this season go to overtime, while it was the eighth such occurrence in 14 outings for the Lady Buffs (3-6-5, 1-3-2).
Both teams are approaching the NCAA record of 10 overtime matches in a season, set during the 2007 season
For the Zias, though, it marks the first time to win the season series from their rivals after posting a 4-1 win at the ENMU pitch earlier this month. It was the first tie in the series and the first mark for the Zias (0-5-1) in Canyon.
The Lady Buffs outshot the Zias 12-7, including 4-2 on goal. ENMU had just two shots, and none on goal, after the first half.
Junior Fabienne Wilson earned the shutout in goal for the Zias.
ENMU’s next outing is on Friday when it hosts Angelo State in a 3 p.m. conference match.
West Texas A&M 1, ENMU 0 (men) — WT’s George Beasley scored off a rebound shot with just under seven minutes left and the 15th-ranked Buffaloes held on to beat the Greyhounds in the second half of the doubleheader.
Beasley scored his fifth goal with 6:40 remaining to decide what was otherwise a relatively even match.
Both teams had nine shots, with the Buffs (10-3-0) owning a 5-2 margin in shots on goal and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks over the Hounds (8-5-2).
The Hounds return to action next Friday at Midwestern State.
