Kingsville rallies to beat Zias in five

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Texas A&M-Kingsville rallied from a set down to edge Eastern New Mexico University 25-15, 17-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13 in Lone Star Conference volleyball on Saturday.

The Javelinas (13-12, 5-5 LSC) took the lead for good in the fifth set at 8-4 with a run of four consecutive points. The Zias (5-15, 3-8) closed to within a point on two occasions before Kingsville held them off.

Kelsey Washington posted team highs of 15 kills and 17 digs for the Javs. ENMU was led by 15 kills from freshman outside hitter Lauren Frye, 14 kills from senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Maddams and 13 kills and 18 digs from freshman outside hitter Courtney Lawson.

Senior libero Hayley Couch had a match-high 19 digs for ENMU, while junior setter Kennedi Catano just missed a double-double with 40 assists and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Agatha Gibbons posted eight kills and four total blocks (three solos).

After dropping the first set, the Zias erased an 8-4 deficit in Game 2 with seven consecutive points, including two kills by Maddams. Kingsville closed within a point five times, but the Zias ended it on a 10-3 run.

The third set was tied 10 times, the last at 18-18, before the Zias forced four attack errors and Lawson added two kills in a set -ending 7-1 charge. Kingsville led the entire fourth set to pull even.

ENMU returns to action on Friday with a 6 p.m. (MDT) match at West Texas A&M.
