Shutouts have Portales optimistic

SANTA FE — Sara Vasquez was back on the sidelines for the Portales girls soccer team this weekend and her team treated her to a good weekend.

The Lady Rams, coming off a 2-0 District 2/1A-3A win at Monte del Sol on Friday, followed it up with a 4-0 shutout of Desert Academy on Saturday. Vasquez, who delivered a son, Kellan Ryan, on Oct. 8, is optimisitic about the chances for PHS (7-12, 5-5 district) to reach the 12-team state playoffs later today.

“It’s great to come back,” Vasquez said. “There were lots of smiles todayl. It’s good to come back to winning.”

Junior Hannah Evans scored off a penalty kick midway through the first half and the Lady Rams added three more goals after halftime, two bhy junor Chelsea Lopez.

Jasmine Vega earned the shutout in goal, stopping five shots by the Lady Wildcats (8-12, 1-9).

In the boys matchup, the Rams bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Monte del Sol with a 5-3 win over Desert Academy. PHS improved to 8-10 overall (4-6 district) while the Wildcats are 7-12 (2-9).

No other information was available on the boys contest at press time.
