SOCORRO — A goal early in the second half was enough for Socorro to advance in the Class 1A-3A state girls soccer tournament on Saturday.
Dominique Molina found the net for the Lady Warriors in the 46th minute, and they held on for a 1-0 victory over Portales High in a first-round matchup.
The Lady Warriors (11-6-1) were able to get the shutout with backup Mary Barela in goal for the starter, who was unable to play due to a family commitment, PHS coach Sara Vasquez said.
“She was an eighth-grader who had to step up, and she did really well,” Vasquez said.
Portales (7-13) had five shots on goal in the match, compared with 10 for Socorro.
Vasquez said her team increased its offensive pressure in the final 10 minutes, but simply couldn’t break through.
“They (Lady Rams) played their hearts out,” Vasquez said. “This was by far one of the best games (we’ve) had. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but it was a good game overall.”
Senior Jasmin Vega made seven saves in goal for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Warriors advanced to a quarterfinal match against top-seeded Hope Christian at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the APS soccer complex in Albuquerque.
