RICHARDSON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team has been picked sixth out of eight teams while the women were tabbed for eighth in a nine-team league in a preseason poll released by the conference office.
Tarleton State finished with 166 points to edge Midwestern State, with 163, in the men’s preseason poll, although the Mustangs had 12 of 23 first-place votes to nine for the Texans. MSU won the regular-season championship last season while Tarleton took the tournament championship.

Cameron’s Craig Foster, the LSC player of the year in 2012-13, was chosen the preseason player of the year after leading the Aggies to their first NCAA Division II tournament berth.
Midwestern, which shared the LSC title last year with the departed Abilene Christian and won the tourney title, received 20 of 25 first-place votes on the women’s side and finished with 218 points to 190 for West Texas A&M and 188 for Tarleton State.
The Zias compiled 69 points to beat out Texas A&M-Kingsville (48).
TSU’s Kiara Wright, last year’s player of the year, was the preseason choice this time after leading D-II in rebounding (14.0 rpg) and finishing second in field goal percentage (61 percent).
The regular season begins on Friday. The eight-team conference tournament is scheduled for March 5-8 at McAllen, Texas.
