Hounds drop Tip-Off game

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Senior forward Jordan Talbert posted his second double-double of the weekend with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Lane Barlow hit two go-ahead freethrows with 19 seconds left Satuday night, leading Missouri Southern past Eastern New Mexico University’s men 68-65 in the D-II Tip Off Classic.

Cameron Cornelius added 15 points and seve n rebounds for the Lions (2-0), who got past St. Mary’s 61-54 on Friday. Barlow added 13 points.

ENMU, playing its season opener, was led by senior point guard Rodney Blackmon with 25 points, but no one else had more than seven as the Greyhounds shot just 33 percent from the floor (20-of-60) and were outrebounded 46-37.

ENMU led 6-2 early before the Lions went on a 6-0 run. A Blackmon 3-pointer gave the lead back to the Hounds, but Southern answered with a 10-4 run over the next two minutes.

An 8-0 run over the next four minutes sent ENMU back in front 21-18, but the Hounds scored just seven points over the final seven minutes of the half. A tip-in by Barlow at the buzzer pushed Southern in front 33-28 at halftime.

Missouri Southern opened the half with the first six points, extending the lead to double figures on a 3-pointer by Barlow with a minute gone in the stanza. Devin Spencer’s basket made it 46-34 with just over 15 minutes left before the Hounds countered back.

ENMU tied the game 48-48 on a Kyle Lantz 3-pointer with 9:08 to go, capping a 14-2 surge, then Blackmon had four free throws and he and Jordan Romero netted 3-pointers to cap a 10-0 run that gave the Hounds a 60-55 lead with five minutes left.

The Lions countered with their own 10-0 run. Blackmon made it 65-62 on a layup with 32 seconds left, then drained a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left after a steal by Mike Randle to tie the score.

After Barlow’s free throws, Blackmon’s layup was off the mark with eight seconds left and Matt Everson gave the Lions a three-point lead by hitting 1-of-2 free throws. Blackmon’s last-second 3 was then off the mark.

ENMU opens its home schedule next Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against University of the Southwest at Greyhound Arena. Coach Andrew Helton said it will be Green Out Night, with free T-shirts given to the first 700 stuidents with a valid student ID.
